Get Your Garage Door Ready For Winter

Posted on

Winter is on the way and there are a number of things that you can do to prepare your garage door for the upcoming season. From performing important maintenance to installing beautiful holiday door decorations, there are many ways to attend to your garage door in the coming weeks and months.

Clean and Maintain the Weather Stripping

The weather stripping is the gasket around your door that prevents the cold air from leaking into your garage. Maintaining the weather stripping is an important part of keeping warmer air in the garage during the cold winter months. Use a gentle scrubber or rag and a mild detergent mixed with warm water to clean the weather stripping around the door every winter. As you do this, inspect the weather stripping for cracks and leaks. If the stripping has begun to deteriorate, speak with a garage door repair person about replacing the weather stripping. Alternatively, some weather stripping is sold in home improvement centers and hardware stores. If you're a DIY enthusiast, you may enjoy replacing this yourself.

Get a Tune Up or Repair

Having a garage door repair person to your home should be an annual tradition in order to maintain the normal functioning of your door. Upon arrival, your garage door repair person should lubricate springs and check the wiring, test the sensors and make recommendations for repair.

Decorate the Door for the Holidays

Decorating your garage door can be fun for holidays like Christmas and New Year's. To decorate your door, you may use one of these ideas or come up with a door-decorating idea of your own.

  • Wreath. A garage door is a perfect place to hang a large wreath on your house. To attach the wreath, use a wreath hanger instead of a large nail to avoid damaging your garage door. Note that a wreath may prevent your garage door from properly opening and closing, and is only appropriate for people who do not use their garage door on a regular basis.
  • Ribbon. Attach red ribbon to the front of your door to make your garage door look like a large white present. Done properly, this should not interfere with the opening and closing of your door, and is an option for people who use their garage door regularly.
  • Murals. Garage door murals that can be hung on the outside of the door are commercially available and many are designed not to interfere with the normal functioning of the door.
  • Garland. Hanging green garland around the outside of the garage door makes your home look festive and does not interfere with the normal functioning of the door.

Now it's time to get started with your winter garage door-related chores and projects. With all this done, your garage door should be ready for another long winter. Contact a company like Overhead Door Co. of Everett Inc. for more tips.
